Other major attractions are the exotic Yeddi Gozel (Seven beauties) waterfalls. This waterfall is near Ruskan village. The highest waterfall in the country – Michekhchadaur (53 meters in height) at the Demiraparanchay river gorge.

There is also a restaurant and a tea house. The waterfall is always dark and cool because it is located in a dense forest that is not affection by the sun’s rays.

The culture of Gabala

Not far from the Nij village, at the Yalolu-Tepeh mountain, archeologists found an ancient settlement.

That settlement dating to III-I centuries B.C., thus providing a rich historical-archeological resource for study.

As result of excavations, there are discoveries as iron knives, daggers, swords, brass rings, golden earrings, stone grinds unique ceramic dishware and jugs.

As well as discoveries consisting of the archeological culture of the antique period.

This culture cover in the north mountainous and steppe regions of Azerbaijan and bears the name of Yalolu-Tepe culture.

Gabala’s history is also rich in nature and is one of the most striking pages of Azerbaijani history. The name of this place is first by the ancient city of Gabala. As well as the capital of the ancient Caucasian Albania for 900 years (from the fourth century BC to the fifth century BCE) and its magnificent castle walls. The loation of Ancient Gabala is 20 km south-west of the district. Along the Corlu and Black rivers in the northeastern part of present-day Cukur Gabala was famous for its grandeur, an important political. As well as economic and commercial center with ancient and famous cities like Babylon, Troy, Pompeii, Carthage are being compared.

The 2,400-year-old city of Gabala was the ancient Silk Road for the Roman scholar Greater Plinini Kabalaka. In addition the Greek geographer Claudius Ptolemy (2nd century) and the Arabian historian Balazuri (IX century). The home museum of the prominent Azerbaijani writer, military and public figure IB Kutgashinli was in the region in 1985-1986. and the writer’s tomb was under reconstruction. Since 1988 the richest museum of local lore has been operating in the district center. In 2006, a museum and electronic library were opened in the district center to perpetuate the life and activity of the prominent statesman. In addition nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev, who has led the country for more than 30 years. Ismayil bey Kutgashinli, (1806-1869) Ibrahimbay Musabeyov (1880-1942), Umnisa Mrs.

There are 93 immovable historical and cultural monuments in the territory of Gabala region.

Of these monuments, 1 is of global importance, 31 are of national importance, and 61 are of local significance. There are 17 monuments of architecture, 69 monuments of archeology. As well as 4 of them are examples of decorative and applied arts, 2 of them are related to parks, monuments and memorials. So, there is the Jalil Mammadguluzadeh Folk Theater, the Zopu Zopu Ethnographic Folk Dance Ensemble at the House of Culture in Bum settlement, and the Gabala District School of Arts in 1969 on the initiative of the conductor Maestro Niyazi.

The main fund of the Gabala Museum of History and Ethnography, established in 1980, is home to 13,000 exhibits reflecting the 2,400-year history of Gabala. Archeological, numismatic materials, examples of folk art, ancient manuscripts and printed books are of particular interest. The museum has branches of the memorial house of IB Kutgashinli and the Museum of Martyrs. The museum has 13 exposition halls, a fund, an Heydar Aliyev memorial room, a photo gallery, a rich scientific library and an open-air exhibition area from ancient stone monuments.

Discover Gabala

The administrative center of the Gabala region is at the foot of the south-western hills of the great Caucasian Chain.

In the vicinity of the Tufandagh (4191 meters) and Bazaryurd (4126 meters) mountain peaks.

The ruins of the ancient city cover 20 km away from the region’s center. At the hilly locate between the Qarachay and Shorloochay rivers, where we can still find the remains of the majestic fortress structures of the ancient, antique city.

Gabala is 1000 m long. It starts and ends at heights of 1,251 and 1,660 metres above sea level, respectively. Each car has a capacity of 8 people (640 kg). It is able to carry 2,200 people per hour. There are 35 closed cars. The cars travel at 6 m/sec.

Duruja is 1,117 m long. It starts and ends at heighs of 1,251 and 1,410 metres above sea level respectively. Each car has a capacity of 8 people (640 kg). It is able to carry 1,800 people per hour. There are 21 closed  and 21 open cars on Duruja. The cars travel at 6 m/sec.

Sleeping Beauty is 1,113 m long. It starts and ends at heighs of 1,410 and 1,920 metres above sea level respectively. Each car has a capacity of 8 people (640 kg). It is able to carry 1,800 people per hour. There are 20 closed  and 20 open cars on Sleeping Beauty. The cars travel at 5 m/sec.

Gabala Recreation Center Complex

Nohur Lake is located 3 km to the east of Gabala, 1 km north of Nohurqishlag village.  700m above sea level in the natural hole between the Gullurun, Goydag and Yumuru mountains. Amazed by its beauty, the Nohur Lake, the calm atmosphere and the sound of birds create the perfect environment for relaxing city noise. Although it is not permitted to swim in the lake (the lake also acts as a water reservoir and provides drinking water to Gabala and surrounding areas), it is an ideal fishing destination. Here you can also enjoy the surrounding scenery by taking small boats and catamarans.

GABALA – the capital of ancient Caucasian Albania

The historical region Gabala is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Azerbaijan. Today are familiar to many foreign cultural workers. It has had a significant impact on the socio-economic development of the whole region.

Gabala is one of the highest rates of tourism development in Azerbaijan. Every year, thousands of tourists visit the area to see the mysterious nature of Gabala. Gabala was the first capital city of Albania, beginning in the 4th century BC, which has played an important role in the economic, political and cultural life of the country, and has been mentioned in written sources since the first century AD.

The headquarters of the Albanian rulers is here. It is the same as the world’s major political and economic strategic cities like Babylon, Troy and Carthage. Although the Roman armies attack Albania in the sixties BC, they did not occupy Gabala. During the Sassanid era, Gabala was a great trading and crafts center.

The city has maintained its importance as a trade and crafts center during the caliphate. Although the Mongols were in decline during the XIII century, they were revived. In the middle of the eighteenth century, the population gradually move from here until Gabala began to lose its former glory and importance.

GABALA – the capital of ancient Caucasian Albania
